| built from kits purchased through the All-American Soap Box Derby organization. Each summer girls and boys ages eight to seventeen build and drive their own cars in a local Soap Box Derby race. At the local races children compete for prizes and trophies, and All-American Soap Box Derby "World Championship" Race at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio. This year on July 31, more than 400 youngsters from throughout the United States and several foreign countries will compete for the World Championship titles. Top finishers at the World Championships win trophies, prizes and college scholarships. Three Racing Divisions For the first-time Soap Box Derby builder, there is the Stock Division racer. The racer is in kit form that includes everything needed to build the car. Included in the kit are steering and brake hardware, axles, one-piece plastic body shell, pre-cut and pre-drilled floorboard, all hardware and simple to follow assembly instructions The object of the Stock Car Division is to introduce Derby competition to novice children and families. With adult supervision a youngster can assemble the Stock racer within one day. Derby rules mandate that every Stock cars remain unpainted. For the more advanced builder/racer the Super Stock Division racer is a kit-assembled car that is heavier, longer and larger than the Stock car. It offers a more sophisticated level of design and allows more in finishing schemes since Derby rules allow cars in this division to be painted. For veterans of Soap Box Derby racing there is the Masters Division racer. These are the sleekest-looking cars of the three divisions and offer the most in terms of weight, length, and flexibility of design. Rally Racing program In addition to the annual summer championship racing at the local and national levels, there are other racing circuits for Soap Box Derby enthusiasts. These are called the rally programs. Each Local chapter sponsors two additional races - one in the spring and one in the fall. For these races, you are invited to race at any or all of the local rally events. They are scheduled so that they do not overlap, so an avid racing family can spend many weekends in the spring and fall racing at these events. Not only an excellent way to fine-tune your racer and sharpen your driving skills, but leading point earners at the end of the Spring rallies win the opportunity to represent their geographic division in Akron at a National Rally Championship race which is held each summer concurrent with the All-American Championship. Goals of the Soap Box Derby Program have not changed since it began in 1934. They are to foster a stronger parent-child relationship; to help develop positive attitudes in sportsmanship and competition; to help in the growth of pride. |
