History of the Event
In 1980, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 34 assisted with the local Akron Soap Box Derby. A gentleman named
Dave Mitan was working with the racers when he felt a tug on his shirt. He turned around to see a special needs child. That
small child asked, “Why Can’t I do that?” Dave was so moved that he discussed the experience with other member vets.
The chapter immediately met with the All American Soap Box Derby, designed & built the cars. In 1981 the first local
Super Kids Classic was held in Akron. In the following years, the Veterans traveled the country helping other locales to hold
their own events. In 2003, the National Super Kids Classic was formed.
The Bucks County Super Kids Classic
We hope to have as many as forty special needs kids from all across Bucks County participate in a double elimination soap
box derby race. Each child will ride in the car at least four times during the event, more if the racer wins a heat. The cars
used in the race are designed to carry two people, one of whom will be an experienced driver. Some of the cars are wheel
chair accessible. All racers will be provided with bicycle style safety helmets to use during the event.
Each child will be given a medallion to commemorate his / her participation in the event. Each racer will be given a tee-shirt
to wear & keep.
There will be a hospitality tent where light refreshments will be served, the kids can decorate their own pinewood derby car,
and race it on a track. Paper and drawing materials will also be on hand if a child wants to color while he/she waits for the
next race. Plan to bring your child’s lunch with you.
The event is being held at the Bucks County Community College East Parking Lot. Depending on participation there may be
a morning and an afternoon event. We expect that a child will spend about four hours participating in the race.
An awards ceremony is planned to be held on September 24, 2007 at 6:00 PM at the
Pennwood Middle School.
Two kids from the event will be sent to the National Super Kids Classic in Akron, OH, a similar national level event, held in
July, 2008. Lodging and meals during the event for each child and a parent are being provided by the National Super Kids
Classic and we will assist with travel expenses to the event.
Any special needs child may participate who is:
Between the ages of 8 & 18
No taller than 5’6”
Weighs no more than 150 lbs
Wheel chair accessible cars are limited and will be assigned on a first come first serve basis.
